Opening on June 7, 1999, at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios), Bear in the Big Blue House: Live on Stage! was a gentle, interactive show designed specifically for preschool-aged guests. Based on the hit Jim Henson Television series, the attraction brought Bear and his friends to life in a cozy, carpeted theater tucked into Soundstage 5 in the Animation Courtyard—formerly home to the Soundstage Restaurant.
Unlike traditional stage shows, guests were invited to sit on the floor near the stage, creating an intimate, playroom-style atmosphere. The show featured:
- Bear, the 7-foot-tall host with his signature sniff-and-greet
- Tutter the mouse, Ojo the curious cub, Treelo the lemur, Pip and Pop the otters, and Shadow
- A storyline centered around planning a surprise birthday party for Tutter
- Songs from the TV series, including Bear’s “Welcome Song” and the gentle “Goodbye Song” sung with Luna the Moon
The show ran approximately 25 minutes, with live performers, audio-animatronic puppets, and pre-recorded voices synchronized to the characters’ movements. Special effects like bubbles, confetti, and even scent cues added to the sensory experience.
Created by Jim Henson Productions and Walt Disney Imagineering, the show was developed in collaboration with series creators Mitchell Kriegman and Alex Rockwell. It was praised for its educational value, gentle humor, and emotional warmth, earning a Thea Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in a Live Show in 2000.
Though there were no formal meet-and-greets, the proximity of the characters and the interactive format made it feel deeply personal for young guests. Merchandise stands outside the theater offered plush toys, books, and themed souvenirs.
Bear in the Big Blue House: Live on Stage! closed on August 4, 2001, after just over two years of operation, to make way for Playhouse Disney: Live on Stage!, which opened on October 1, 2001. The new show expanded the format to include characters from other Playhouse Disney favorites like:
- Rolie Polie Olie
- Stanley
- The Book of Pooh
- And segments still featuring Bear and friends at the beginning and end
The theater continued to evolve over the years, eventually becoming Disney Junior – Live on Stage!, and later Disney Junior Play and Dance!
