An opening day feature of Disney-MGM Studios, the Earffel Tower was a 130-foot tall water tower (sans water), wearing the world’s largest pair of Mickey Ears, found on the backlot of the studios property. Despite its location, the Earffel Tower was selected to be used as the park’s icon.
In 2008, when the name of the park became Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the tower was updated to reflect the new name and logo.
As plans were announced to expand Hollywood Studios to include two new lands (Toy Story Land & Galaxy’s Edge), it became evident that the plans would inevitably include the demolition of the backlot. For quite some time, as demolitions began, the tower remained standing. Unfortunately for those who remained hopeful, in April 2016 it was officially removed.
