As one of EPCOT Center’s original opening day attractions, El Rio Del Tiempo (“The River of Time”) offered a tranquil yet immersive journey through Mexico’s history, culture, and mythology. Guests boarded flat-bottomed boats and drifted beneath a twilight sky, past a volcano, and into a series of richly detailed scenes that blended Audio-Animatronics, live-action footage, and interactive elements.
The attraction featured two original songs by X Atencio (lyricist of Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me) and Grim Grinning Ghosts) and Armando Corral:
- Vistas de Mexico – an upbeat, scenic theme that played throughout the majority of the ride
- Fiestas in Mexico – a celebratory farewell tune accompanying the final city scene
Though beloved for its atmosphere, El Rio Del Tiempo was often described as slow-paced and dated by the early 2000s. On January 2, 2007, the attraction closed for refurbishment.
