🦄 Enchanted Forest (Never Realized)

Status: Cancelled
Proposed Era: Late 1980s – Early 1990s
Planned Location: Magic Kingdom – Fantasyland Expansion
Archived Badge: Concept Art Referenced – Ride System Drafted

🌲 What Was It?

The Enchanted Forest was Imagineering’s early attempt to expand Fantasyland beyond its medieval village aesthetic. This new area would have embraced a lush, woodland theme, drawing inspiration from European folklore, Arthurian legends, and original Disney fantasy concepts.

Proposed features included:

  • A unicorn-themed dark ride, where guests would journey through a misty forest to rescue a mythical creature from a dark sorcerer.
  • A storybook boat ride, gliding past scenes from lesser-known fairy tales and enchanted glades.
  • Interactive grottos and forest paths, with animatronic woodland creatures, glowing mushrooms, and hidden surprises.
  • A treehouse-style dining area, nestled in the canopy with views of the forest below.

The land was designed to feel organic and immersive, with winding paths, ambient music, and a sense of quiet wonder—more ethereal than the bustling village of classic Fantasyland.

🛑 What Happened?

The Enchanted Forest was ultimately cancelled due to:

  • Budget constraints, as other projects like Euro Disney and Disney’s Hollywood Studios took priority.
  • A shift toward IP-driven expansions, which favored recognizable characters over original fantasy concepts.
  • The eventual development of New Fantasyland, which absorbed some of the forested aesthetic but focused on princess stories like Beauty and the Beast and Tangled.

While the unicorn ride and original fairy tale elements were shelved, the idea of a woodland-themed expansion lived on in the design of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Enchanted Tales with Belle.

🖼️ What Remains?

  • Concept art showing misty forests, unicorn stables, and glowing glades.
  • Ride system sketches for a gentle dark ride with trackless or boat-based movement.
  • Design echoes in New Fantasyland’s landscaping, especially around the Be Our Guest area and Ariel’s Grotto.
  • Fan speculation that some Enchanted Forest ideas were folded into early pitches for Beastly Kingdom at Animal Kingdom.

🧩 Why It Matters

The Enchanted Forest represents a rare moment when Disney considered expanding Fantasyland with original mythic storytelling, rather than relying solely on film-based IP. Its cancellation left a gap in the park’s fantasy offerings—but its spirit lingers in the quiet corners of New Fantasyland.
