An Opening Day attraction, The Grand Prix Raceway differed from its sister attraction at Disneyland (Autopia) as it was not set on a futuristic roadway. Instead, the story line was set to take place at an International road race, with guests taking the wheel of a Grand Prix race car.
Originally sponsored by Goodyear, the attraction was expanded in 1973, shortened in 1974 (to make way for Space Mountain) and then shortened further in the late 80’s when Mickey’s Birthdayland was built.
In 1994, as part of the “New Tomorrowland” project, the attraction was renamed to “Tomorrowland Indy Speedway” though the track and vehicles were unchanged. It was remodeled again in 1999 as a result of Disney partnering with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and then subsequently changed again in 2008 when the partnership ended, giving way to its new name “Tomorrowland Speedway”.
