🎬 The Great Muppet Movie Ride (Never Realized)
Status: Cancelled
Proposed Era: Early 1990s
Planned Location: Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios)
Archived Badge: Concept Art Confirmed – Ride Script Drafted
🐸 What Was It?
The Great Muppet Movie Ride was a proposed dark ride parody of The Great Movie Ride, starring Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of the Muppet gang. Guests would have boarded ride vehicles for a backstage tour of “Muppet Studios,” only to find the production hilariously off the rails.
The attraction was designed as a chaotic spoof of Hollywood genres, with the Muppets attempting (and failing) to recreate famous movie scenes. Proposed show scenes included:
- Miss Piggy in a musical number gone wrong, complete with falling props and confused dancers.
- Fozzie Bear directing a gangster film, with banana peels instead of bullets.
- Gonzo’s sci-fi spectacular, featuring malfunctioning robots and exploding sets.
- Statler and Waldorf heckling from a balcony, offering commentary throughout the ride.
The tone was pure Muppet mayhem—self-aware, slapstick, and packed with in-jokes about filmmaking and theme park attractions.
🛑 What Happened?
Despite early development and concept art, The Great Muppet Movie Ride was cancelled due to:
- The stalled Muppet Studios expansion, which was planned for the area behind Star Tours.
- Disney’s acquisition negotiations with Jim Henson’s company, which were delayed and ultimately fell through in the early 1990s.
- Shifting park priorities, including the rise of thrill rides and IPs with broader merchandising appeal.
Elements of the concept were later adapted into MuppetVision 3D*, which opened in 1991 and remains one of the last projects Jim Henson worked on.
🖼️ What Remains?
Concept art and internal pitch materials reveal:
- A stylized Muppet Studios façade, with exaggerated architecture and pun-filled signage.
- Ride layouts showing genre-themed show scenes, each collapsing in classic Muppet fashion.
- A proposed pre-show film featuring Rizzo the Rat as a tour guide.
These visuals have appeared in Imagineering retrospectives and fan archives, preserving the dream of a ride that would’ve let the Muppets take over Hollywood—badly.
🧩 Why It Matters
The Great Muppet Movie Ride represents a rare moment when Disney considered a full-scale Muppet attraction with the same ambition as Pirates of the Caribbean or Haunted Mansion. It was irreverent, clever, and deeply meta—a love letter to movies and theme parks alike. For fans and archivists, it’s a reminder that sometimes the best ideas are the ones that fall apart… on purpose.
