Opening on June 5, 1972, just eight months after Magic Kingdom’s debut, If You Had Wings was a sponsored Omnimover attraction in Tomorrowland, brought to life by Eastern Air Lines, Walt Disney World’s official airline at the time. Designed by Claude Coats, the ride was a four-and-a-half-minute journey through Eastern’s travel destinations, blending rear-projected film, stylized sets, and a catchy theme song composed by Buddy Baker.
Guests boarded in a sleek, airport-style terminal and were whisked away to:
- Mexico – cliff divers, flower boats, and Aztec pyramids
- Puerto Rico – straw-hat markets and steel drum bands
- Jamaica – limbo dancers and beach scenes
- Bermuda – pastel architecture and harbor views
- New Orleans – jazz musicians and Mardi Gras flair
- The Bahamas, Trinidad, and other Caribbean locales
The ride featured:
- Animated silhouettes of airplanes morphing into birds
- A speed tunnel finale, with flight footage projected on curved walls
- A mirror room simulating snow-covered mountains
- A working Eastern Airlines reservation desk at the exit, where guests could book real travel
The attraction was free with park admission, making it a popular stop for budget-conscious guests during the ticket book era.
On June 1, 1987, Eastern Air Lines ended its sponsorship, and the attraction closed. Just five days later, it reopened as If You Could Fly on June 6, 1987:
- The sets and layout remained intact
- The theme song and branding were removed
- A new ambient soundtrack replaced Buddy Baker’s original tune
Though short-lived, this version served as a transitional placeholder, keeping the ride system active while Disney prepared for a more substantial overhaul.
The ride space later hosted:
- Delta Dreamflight (1989–1996), sponsored by Delta Air Lines
- Take Flight (1996–1998), a non-sponsored version with minor changes
- Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (1999–present), which still uses the original Omnimover system
Elements of If You Had Wings live on in Buzz Lightyear’s:
- Loading and unloading areas
- Speed tunnel finale, now repurposed for laser target gameplay
- Ride system mechanics, including vehicle rotation controls
The original theme song, “If You Had Wings,” remains a cult favorite among Disney fans, often compared to It’s a Small World for its catchy repetition and nostalgic charm.
