Muppet Mobile Lab was a free-roaming, interactive show featuring Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant Beaker, piloting a zany science contraption through Future World at EPCOT. Designed as part of Disney’s Living Character Initiative, the Mobile Lab was a two-wheeled rocket-shaped vehicle packed with special effects—fog machines, flashing lights, confetti cannons, and spray jets—all controlled remotely by puppeteers located up to several miles away.
The real magic? Bunsen and Beaker could see, hear, and respond to guests in real time thanks to onboard cameras, microphones, and speakers. Their interactions were spontaneous, hilarious, and often involved mock experiments or surprise celebrations. The show was a technical marvel, earning a Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement (Technical) in 2009.
Though it debuted in 2007, the Muppet Mobile Lab had a sporadic presence at EPCOT and other Disney parks, including Disney California Adventure and Hong Kong Disneyland. It returned briefly to EPCOT in October 2016 for a limited engagement, but has not been seen since.
The Mobile Lab remains a fan-favorite example of Disney’s push toward interactive, mobile Audio-Animatronics, paving the way for future innovations like Remy’s roaming appearances, Star Wars droids, and even Project Kiwi (Disney’s walking robot initiative).
