Opening on May 16, 1991, MuppetVision 3D* was more than just a theme park attraction—it was Jim Henson’s final major project, completed just before his passing in May 1990. Directed by Henson himself, the show blended 3D film technology with 4D in-theater effects, creating a chaotic, heartfelt experience that captured the spirit of the Muppets like nothing else.
Guests were welcomed into Muppet Studios, where Kermit the Frog led a behind-the-scenes tour of the Muppets’ latest innovation: 3D filmmaking. But things quickly spiraled out of control when Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker introduced Waldo C. Graphic, a mischievous “3D sprite” who wreaked havoc across the screen—and the theater.
💥 4D Effects That Brought the Muppets to Life
- Audio-Animatronics of Statler and Waldorf heckling from the balcony
- A live full-bodied Sweetums who ran through the theater
- Soap bubbles, smoke, water sprays, and exploding walls
- A projected cannonball hole that “blew out” the back of the theater
The preshow area was a treasure trove of Muppet humor, with monitors playing a loop of chaotic studio antics:
- Sam Eagle tried to enforce order and dignity, failing spectacularly
- Fozzie Bear demonstrated “cheap 3D tricks,” including a flower that squirted water
- Gonzo attempted to eat a rubber tire to the tune of Flight of the Bumblebee
- Rizzo the Rat disguised himself as Mickey Mouse, complete with ears and falsetto voice
The preshow loop ran 12 minutes, and many fans considered it just as funny as the main show. The queue itself was filled with tongue-in-cheek signage, including “Backstage Passes Not Honored Here” and “Authorized Personnel: Not You.”
MuppetVision 3D* was originally part of a larger plan to create a full Muppet Studios land, including:
- The Great Muppet Movie Ride (a parody of The Great Movie Ride)
- A Muppet-themed restaurant with animatronic performers
- Expanded street sets and interactive props
These plans were shelved after Henson’s death, but MuppetVision 3D* remained a beloved anchor of Muppet Courtyard.
In November 2024, Disney announced the closure of MuppetVision 3D* and the surrounding Muppet Courtyard to make way for a new Monsters, Inc.-themed land. The final day of operation is scheduled for June 7, 2025, with a Cast Member farewell event on June 8.
While the attraction is closing, the Muppets aren’t disappearing entirely. They’re slated to re-theme Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in a new music festival-style experience starring Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, bringing their antics to Sunset Boulevard.
🎈 Fun Facts
- The preshow loop included hidden references to other Muppet productions, including The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock
- Waldo C. Graphic was one of the first fully digital characters created for a theme park attraction
- The cannonball hole in the back wall was a projection illusion, not a physical set piece
- Sweetums’ live appearance was timed to match the on-screen action perfectly—an early example of synchronized media and live performance
