Originally announced in February 2019, the Play! Pavilion was envisioned as a vibrant, interactive space celebrating the future of play, digital innovation, and character-driven experiences. It was part of Epcot’s ambitious transformation and was slated to open in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021.
Housed in the former Wonders of Life Pavilion in World Discovery, the Play! Pavilion was designed as a futuristic city of play, where guests could explore immersive exhibits, hands-on activities, and digital adventures featuring beloved Disney characters.
Planned Experiences (According to Concept Art)
- Animation Academy with Edna Mode – Guests would learn to draw with tips from the fashion-forward icon herself
- Hotel Heist – An interactive game hosted by Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia
- Water Balloon Battle – A digital game featuring characters from across Disney franchises
- Meet-and-Greets – Appearances by Wreck-It Ralph, Vanellope, Joy, Sadness, and Baymax
The concept promised a blend of education, entertainment, and technology, echoing Epcot’s original mission while embracing modern interactivity.
Despite early excitement, the pavilion missed its 2021 opening window. By January 2023, it was quietly removed from Epcot’s guide maps, and Disney confirmed the concept was being reevaluated. No official cancellation has been announced, but the lack of updates, removal from promotional materials, and completion of other transformation projects suggest the Play! Pavilion has been indefinitely shelved.
As of September 2025, the gold-domed building remains unused, and all mentions of the Play! Pavilion have vanished from Disney’s websites and park signage.
