Opening on February 17, 2017, Rivers of Light was the first-ever nighttime spectacular at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, designed to complement the park’s expansion into after-dark experiences. Set on the Discovery River, with seating primarily located in Asia, the show blended water fountains, mist screens, projection mapping, floating lanterns, and custom-built boats into a serene, story-driven celebration of nature and light.
The show was originally conceived as a nighttime parade, but logistical challenges led Imagineers to rework it into a lagoon-based performance, drawing inspiration from World of Color at Disney California Adventure. The final product featured four lotus floats, two lantern sailboats, and a cast of mystical storytellers—including Shaman Aditya and Acolyte Ketu on the Asia side, and Aseema and Ambu on the Dinoland side. These performers communicated through music, dance, and shadow puppetry, never speaking aloud, and were accompanied by a sweeping original score composed by Don L. Harper and Mark Mancina.
For the first year and a half, the show included live performers, but they were quietly removed in September 2018 due to budget cuts. Their absence shifted the show’s tone, making it more abstract and less character-driven.
In May 2019, a revised version titled Rivers of Light: We Are One debuted. While the core structure remained intact, the update introduced footage from Disneynature films, animated characters, and a reworked soundtrack that wove in familiar Disney musical themes. This version aimed to create a more emotionally resonant experience, though some fans felt it diluted the original’s contemplative tone.
Following the COVID-19 closure of Walt Disney World in March 2020, Rivers of Light did not return with the rest of the resort. On July 16, 2020, Disney confirmed that the show was permanently retired, along with Primeval Whirl and Stitch’s Great Escape.
