An Opening Day attraction at Disney-MGM Studios, Superstar Television debuted on May 1, 1989, offering guests the chance to step into the world of television production. Using green screen technology, the show placed selected guests into scenes from iconic TV series, demonstrating how live compositing and special effects brought entertainment to life.
Much like the Backstage Studio Tour water effects tank, guests were chosen in advance and sent backstage to meet the “directors,” get costumed, and rehearse. Once the audience was seated, the newly minted “actors” performed in scenes from shows like The Three Stooges, I Love Lucy, The Tonight Show, and The Golden Girls, with the final edited version shown live on monitors
In mid-1997, the attraction received a refurbishment to update its show lineup and boost attendance, adding clips from Empty Nest and Home Improvement. However, just a year later, Superstar Television closed permanently on September 26, 1998, to make way for Doug: Live!, continuing the theater’s tradition of interactive entertainment.
