As the centerpiece of Disney-MGM Studios’ opening day, The Great Movie Ride was more than an attraction—it was a love letter to Hollywood. Housed inside a full-scale replica of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the ride used a trackless “traveling theater” system, allowing guests to glide through elaborate sets representing iconic moments in film history.
The attraction featured a blend of:
- Live actors, including a gangster or bandit who hijacked the ride vehicle mid-show
- Audio-Animatronics, recreating stars like Gene Kelly, Clint Eastwood, and Harrison Ford
- Projection effects, synchronized with lighting and sound
- Original film dialogue, later supplemented with recorded narration between scenes

- Footlight Parade – A stylized musical number featuring a rotating cake platform and synchronized swimmers (later modified due to mechanical issues)
- Singin’ in the Rain – Gene Kelly swings from a lamppost in a rainy city street

- The Public Enemy – A gritty gangster alley with live actor interaction
- Dollars Trilogy / The Searchers – Western showdown featuring Clint Eastwood and John Wayne
- Alien – A suspenseful corridor aboard the Nostromo, complete with xenomorph attack
- Raiders of the Lost Ark – Indiana Jones and Sallah discover the Ark amid booby traps
- Tarzan the Ape Man – Tarzan swings through the jungle with Jane
- Casablanca – Rick and Ilsa say goodbye on the foggy tarmac
- Fantasia – Sorcerer Mickey conjures magic in a starry void
- The Wizard of Oz – Munchkinland and the Wicked Witch, followed by a dazzling Emerald City finale
🎠Footlight Parade: A Scene of Constant Revision
Originally one of the most ambitious scenes, Footlight Parade featured:
- A rotating cake platform with water effects
- Art-deco hallway with diving board swimmers and bubble machines
- Music and lighting synced to the choreography
Due to frequent mechanical failures, the cake’s rotation and water effects were disabled. The hallway was darkened, swimmers removed or repositioned, and a scrim with projection lighting replaced the original kinetic elements.
🔧 Other Updates Over Time
- Live actor roles were adjusted, and some scenes saw reduced interaction
- Animatronics were updated or replaced for accuracy and maintenance
- The final montage film, originally narrated by James Earl Jones, was updated in 2015 with a new edit sponsored by Turner Classic Movies, featuring Robert Osborne as host
- Onboard narration was added between scenes to reduce reliance on Cast Member scripting
As Disney’s Hollywood Studios evolved, The Great Movie Ride became the last remaining opening-day attraction. On July 15, 2017, it was announced at D23 Expo that the ride would close to make way for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, a trackless dark ride using 2.5D projection technology.
The ride officially closed on August 13, 2017, marking the end of an era. Though the Chinese Theatre remains, its marquee now celebrates animation rather than cinema history.
