Before The Magic of Disney Animation officially opened, guests visiting Disney-MGM Studios in its earliest months were offered a temporary experience known as the Walking Tour of the Animation Courtyard. This short-lived offering gave guests a behind-the-scenes look at Disney’s animation process while the full attraction was still under construction.
The tour included a self-guided walkthrough of the Roy E. Disney Animation Building, where guests could peer into glass-enclosed hallways and observe animators at work. Early concept art, maquettes, and production materials were displayed along the route, offering a rare glimpse into the creation of upcoming films like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. While there was no formal show or film presentation, Cast Members were stationed throughout the area to answer questions and share insights.
The Walking Tour was always intended as a placeholder, operating from the park’s opening in May 1989 until the debut of The Magic of Disney Animation in late 1990. Once the full attraction launched—with its “Back to Never Land” film, guided tour, and interactive exhibits—the temporary walkthrough was retired.
Though brief, the Walking Tour marked the first time guests could witness real Disney animators working on feature films inside a theme park. It laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most beloved educational attractions at Disney-MGM Studios.
