🌍 Israel, Spain, and Switzerland Pavilions (Never Realized)

Status: Cancelled
Proposed Era: 1980s–1990s
Planned Location: EPCOT – World Showcase
Archived Badge: Concept Art Confirmed – Pavilion Layouts Drafted

🕍 Israel Pavilion

The Israel Pavilion was one of the most publicly discussed World Showcase expansions. Proposed in the early 1980s, it would have featured:

  • A replica of the Western Wall, designed as a cultural and architectural centerpiece.
  • Exhibits on Israeli history, innovation, and agriculture, including desert farming and water technology.
  • A restaurant serving Middle Eastern cuisine, with falafel, hummus, and kosher options.
  • A Circle-Vision 360° film showcasing Israel’s landscapes, cities, and cultural diversity.

The pavilion was even previewed at EPCOT in 1986 with a temporary exhibit, but political sensitivities and lack of sponsorship led to its cancellation.

🪅 Spain Pavilion

The Spain Pavilion was designed to celebrate the country’s rich history, art, and cuisine. Concept art and planning documents suggest:

  • A plaza inspired by Seville or Madrid, with tiled fountains and wrought-iron balconies.
  • A ride or walkthrough experience exploring Spanish explorers, artists, and architecture.
  • A tapas-style restaurant and wine cellar, featuring regional specialties.
  • Live entertainment, including flamenco dancers and classical guitar performances.

Despite strong thematic potential, the pavilion stalled due to funding issues and shifting priorities toward IP-based attractions.

🏔️ Switzerland Pavilion

The Switzerland Pavilion was planned as a celebration of alpine culture and innovation. Highlights from concept materials include:

  • A Matterhorn-style mountain anchoring the pavilion, possibly with a bobsled coaster or scenic ride.
  • Swiss architecture, including chalets, clock towers, and flower-lined balconies.
  • A restaurant serving fondue and Swiss chocolate, with views of the mountain.
  • Exhibits on Swiss engineering, neutrality, and environmental stewardship.

The pavilion was cancelled due to budget constraints and concerns about duplicating the Matterhorn experience from Disneyland.

🧩 Why They Matter

These three pavilions represent EPCOT’s original vision: a global showcase of culture, cuisine, and innovation. Each reached the concept stage with detailed layouts and thematic plans, but none secured the sponsorship or political stability needed to move forward. Their cancellation left gaps in World Showcase’s geographic diversity—and sparked decades of fan speculation.
