Dinosaur, originally known as Countdown to Extinction, was a thrilling dark ride located in DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The attraction opened on April 22, 1998, and has since taken guests on an exhilarating journey back to the late Cretaceous period.
The attraction included an engaging pre-show hosted by Dr. Helen Marsh (Phylicia Rashad) and Dr. Grant Seeker (Wallace Langham), setting the stage for the adventure and explaining the mission to rescue a dinosaur before the meteor strikes. The queue itself was filled with fascinating exhibits, including displays of dinosaur fossils and modern animals with prehistoric ancestry, reinforcing the park’s conservation and education themes.
Dinosaur is known for its use of Enhanced Motion Vehicles (EMVs), which provide a more immersive experience compared to traditional ride vehicles. The attraction also features special effects such as lasers, pyrotechnics, and one of the largest smoke machines ever installed in a theme park—creating a visceral, cinematic atmosphere.
In 2000, the ride’s name was changed to Dinosaur to promote the Disney animated feature film of the same name. While the ride and the movie share a similar premise of an impending asteroid impact, their narratives remained distinct. The attraction retained its original tone and storyline, with only minor updates to reflect the new branding.
On August 10, 2024, it was announced at the D23 Expo that DinoLand U.S.A. will be replaced by a new land called Tropical Americas, featuring a small town called Pueblo Esperanza (Spanish: Village of Hope). The new land is expected to open in Fall 2027, and an Indiana Jones attraction will replace Dinosaur. The exact closure date for Dinosaur has yet to be announced, but it is expected to close sometime in 2026.
