Installed ahead of EPCOT’s Millennium Celebration in 1999, the Innoventions Plaza Shades were a series of brightly colored fabric structures that served both decorative and functional purposes. Suspended between tall metal poles, the shades created patches of relief from the Florida sun across the central plaza, offering guests a place to rest while surrounded by the kinetic energy of Future World.
Though widely criticized by EPCOT purists for clashing with the park’s sleek, geometric aesthetic, the shades became a visual icon of the Innoventions era. Their playful design echoed the Road to Tomorrow branding and added a splash of color to the otherwise concrete-heavy plaza.
In early 2020, as part of EPCOT’s massive entrance and Future World transformation, the shades were removed during the demolition of Innoventions West and the Fountain of Nations. The removal marked the end of an era, as Disney began reshaping the area into World Celebration, with new gardens, pathways, and the CommuniCore Hall and Plaza.
While the shades were never an official attraction, they hold a special place in the hearts of guests who grew up with Innoventions music loops, interactive exhibits, and the Millennium vibe that defined EPCOT in the early 2000s
