Using the Backlot Theater originally constructed for the Beauty and the Beast stage show, The Spirit of Pocahontas debuted at Disney-MGM Studios on June 23, 1995—the same day the animated film was released.
Adapted from its sister production at Disneyland’s Fantasyland Theater, the show retold the story of Pocahontas from the perspective of the Powhatan tribe, using a ceremonial powwow as its framing device. The tribal storyteller, Werowance, guided the audience through Pocahontas’s journey, assuming the role of Chief Powhatan and invoking the spirit of Pocahontas herself.
The production featured:
- A 28-foot Grandmother Willow puppet offering wisdom and guidance
- Special effects like fire, wind, and dramatic lighting
- Live performances of songs from the film, including Just Around the Riverbend and Colors of the Wind
- Tribal members portraying animals and settlers through stylized costumes and props
Despite its immersive staging and heartfelt storytelling, the show had a brief run, closing on February 24, 1996, after just eight months. It was replaced by The Hunchback of Notre Dame: A Musical Adventure, which took over the Backlot Theater later that year.
