An opening day attraction at The Land Pavilion, Kitchen Kabaret debuted with EPCOT Center on October 1, 1982. Located on the bottom floor of the pavilion—now home to the Soarin’ queue—the show was a 13-minute Audio-Animatronic variety revue designed to promote healthy eating through music, comedy, and character-driven storytelling.
Hosted by the ever-enthusiastic Bonnie Appetite (voiced by Jeanine Brown), the show featured a cast of singing and dancing food items, each representing one of the four basic food groups as defined by the USDA at the time: dairy, protein, grains, and fruits/vegetables.
Act One: Chase Those (Meal Time) Blues Away – Bonnie Appetite and the Kitchen Krackpots
Act Two: The Stars of the Milky Way – Mr. Dairy Goods and his Stars of the Milky Way
Act Three: Boogie Woogie Bakery Boy – The Cereal Sisters (Mairzy Oats, Rennie Rice, and Connie Corn)
Act Four: Meat Ditties – Hamm & Eggz, a vaudeville-style comedy duo
Act Five: Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit – Colander Combo and the Fiesta Fruit, a calypso-style finale
Finale: Kabaret Finale – Bonnie Appetite and the entire cast
The show featured 28 Audio-Animatronics, including a trumpet-playing slice of bread, a Mae West-inspired cheese wedge, and a bowtie-wiggling egg. It was a prime example of Epcot’s “edutainment” philosophy, blending education with theatrical flair.
Fans of CommuniCore’s Astuter Computer Revue and Backstage Magic may remember Mr. Eggz making a cameo as an example of how Epcot’s centralized computer systems controlled the park’s animatronics. His appearance helped guests understand the technological magic behind the scenes.
After an impressive 12-year run, Kitchen Kabaret closed on January 3, 1994, making way for its successor: Food Rocks, which carried forward the nutrition theme with pop music parodies and a new host, Fūd Wrapper.
